Travel medicine as a new medical specialty emerged in the 1980’s in response to the growing geographic movements of people with destinations, including developing countries and tropical environments.

Approximately 40 million American’s work or travel abroad each year. Revised recommendations for travel emphasizes an individuated approach, which takes into consideration personal history and the destination of the traveler.

The Sanford Travel & Immunization Clinic has existed since 1991. During this time, we have served thousands of people, giving us the most experience of this kind in the region.

Travel Preparation

Good travel preparation includes the following:

1. Early Planning (i.e. at least 1 month prior to departure)
2. Immunization Assessment
3. Education on Traveler’s Diarrhea
4. Need for malaria prophylaxis
5. Specific advice regarding other particular concerns

Services

• Personal/Comprehensive Evaluation by an Infectious Disease Specialist.
• A complete stock of vaccines available, including yellow fever with governmental stamp, hepatitis A, typhoid, meningococcal vaccine and polio. In addition, other routine vaccinations are available including tetanus, hepatitis B and influenza.
• Educational materials which are kept up-to-date on a weekly basis through such resources as Travax, CDC (Centers for Disease Control) and the WHO (World Health Organization).
• Post-travel illness evaluation as necessary.
• Special arrangements for large group travel.
